Common Rail Locking System: Secure Power Tracks for Commercial & Public Spaces

Most of what we publish about Line8 is aimed at homeowners. This one isn't. It's for facility managers, architects and specifiers working on airports, libraries, co-working spaces, offices and any other public or commercial installation where a power track is accessible to people who aren't the owner of the equipment plugged into it.
In that setting, a plain power track has one practical weakness: anyone can pull an adaptor out. In a home, that's irrelevant. In a public installation, it means adaptors go missing, get swapped, or get added without authorisation. Line8 holds a patent on a mechanism built specifically to close that gap — the Common Rail Locking System (CRLS).
What the Common Rail Locking System Is
CRLS is not to be confused with the push-pull lock-and-key engagement built into every Line8 adaptor — that mechanism governs how a single adaptor seats into the track and is standard on every installation. CRLS is a separate, optional add-on: a locking bar and keyed terminal fitted to a Premium Series track, giving the track itself a central lock.
How It Works
With the track in its locked state:
- Adaptors already fitted to the track can still be repositioned — slid along the rail to a new position.
- Those adaptors can still be engaged, switched on and off as normal. End users keep full functional control.
- Fitted adaptors cannot be removed from the track.
- No new adaptors can be added. The track is closed to anyone without the key.
A single turn of the key returns the track to its unlocked state, and full freedom to add or remove adaptors is restored immediately. There's no per-adaptor process — one key, one turn, the entire rail changes state in seconds.

Why It Matters for Commercial & Public Spaces
The value of CRLS is control without loss of flexibility. A facility manager can lock a track in a public area to stop adaptors from being removed or new ones being tapped on without authorisation — while the people actually using that space keep the ability to reposition and operate the adaptors already fitted, exactly as they would on any Line8 track. When the deployment changes — more capacity needed, a layout reshuffle, a different tenant — the manager unlocks with the key, reconfigures the adaptor count and positions, and locks it again. That turnkey level of control, without an electrician and without downtime, doesn't exist elsewhere in the power track market.
It's suited to any environment where the track is installed in a space the owner doesn't fully control: transport hubs, libraries and public reading rooms, conference and exhibition venues, co-working spaces, and shared office or retail fit-outs.
A World First, Patented in Singapore
The Common Rail Locking System launched in 2019 as part of Line8's original patent family, and is covered by Singapore Certificate of Invention 10201803060R — Adaptor Locking Device (Common Rail Locking System), issued by IPOS. It remains, to our knowledge, the only mechanism of its kind in the power track market: no other power track brand offers a way to centrally lock the rail itself while leaving fitted adaptors mobile and operable.
Where It Fits in the Line8 System
CRLS is available as an add-on for Line8's Premium Series tracks — Model SL, Model R and Model TL — and sits alongside the standard AIT lock-and-key engagement every Line8 adaptor already uses. It isn't part of the standard consumer specification, which is why you won't see it promoted on our homepage. For commercial and public-space projects, it's worth specifying explicitly.
