"Slim" vs Minimalist: What You're Actually Looking For in a Power Track

When people search for the "slimmest power track," what they usually want isn't a specification — it's a look. They're picturing a rail that disappears into the wall or worktop instead of standing proud of it: small, unobtrusive, minimal. "Slim" is the word that comes to mind, but it isn't quite the right question, and the industry's answer to it hides a trade-off worth knowing about.

What "Slim" Actually Measures

Taken literally, slim means depth — how far the track projects off the wall. A handful of monocore power tracks on the market do get down to roughly 19mm on that single measurement, and market it hard as the thinnest available. It's a real number. It's also only one dimension of a track that also has a width, and a cross-section that has to fit conductors, insulation and an earth path inside it.

How That Depth Gets Achieved

There's a fairly standard way to shave a power track down to that kind of depth: replace the full round earth conductor with a thin stamped metal shim, and trim the insulation wrapped around the live conductors to match. It works, and it's inexpensive to produce. It also means the earth path and the current-carrying conductors are doing less than a full-sized system would in the same footprint — a real engineering trade-off, not a marketing detail.

Footprint, Not Depth, Is the Number That Actually Reads as "Minimal"

Stand in front of an installed track and the thing your eye registers isn't the depth in isolation — it's the total bulk of the rail against the wall: width and depth together, plus how clean the finish is. A track that's a couple of millimetres thinner but noticeably wider doesn't necessarily look smaller than one that's slightly deeper but narrower overall.
